Art Bell welcomes Father Malachi Martin, the renowned Catholic priest, author, and former Jesuit who served as advisor to two popes. Fr. Martin shares the remarkable story of his journey from Ireland to the Vatican, his work on the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the unusual arrangement by which Pope Paul VI granted him a rare priestly status outside any diocese or religious order.

The conversation turns to the nature of demonic possession, which Fr. Martin describes as a slow, staged process similar to addiction. He explains the difference between partial possession and "perfect possession," a state from which no person has ever emerged. He estimates roughly ten million Americans may be perfectly possessed, many of them occupying positions of power and influence. Fr. Martin reports that exorcism cases in the northeastern United States have increased 750 to 800 percent since 1970.

Art opens a special phone line inviting atheists and practitioners of the dark arts to interact with Fr. Martin. Callers raise questions about the nature of God, the profile of possessable individuals, and the dangers of the middle plateau where psychics and remote viewers operate. Fr. Martin warns against Ouija boards, transcendental meditation, and spiritual seances as gateways to dangerous spiritual territory.

Key Moments

  1. There is no profile of a possessable person: Martin says since 1970 he has tried to build a profile of who can be possessed and concluded there is none - rich, poor, good, evil, educated, uneducated, it appears completely random.

  2. 10 million perfectly possessed Americans, many in high places: Asked how many perfectly possessed people are in America, Martin estimates roughly 10 million - and says many are not obscure or failures but powerful, successful, in high places shaping policy.

  3. Possession and exorcism up 750-800% since 1970: Martin says that in the northeast corner of the United States alone, the incidence of possession and therefore exorcism has increased 750 to 800 percent since he began the work in 1970, alongside an enormous rise in genuine covens.

  4. Even an atheist is not lost - only the perfectly possessed: After a long exchange with an atheist caller, Martin tells Art the soul is too valuable for atheism alone to damn anyone; the only people who appear lost to him are the perfectly possessed and genuine devil worshipers, because their renunciation is total and deliberate.

  5. Pre-Adamic 'middle plateau' and the reconstructed universe: Answering a caller about what existed before mankind, Martin lays out his cosmology: Genesis hints at sons of God, daughters of men, and giants; the present universe is a reconstruction after Lucifer's revolt, and a 'middle plateau' remnant of the original creation is where Lucifer still operates until the last day.
