John Anthony West (1932–2018) was an Emmy Award-winning author and independent Egyptologist known for championing the geological water-erosion hypothesis of the Great Sphinx, which proposed a civilization far older than mainstream Egyptology accepted. On Art Bell's programs, his book Serpent in the Sky and his Emmy-winning documentary Mystery of the Sphinx, featuring geologist Robert Schoch, challenged orthodox dating and ignited worldwide debate about the age of ancient Egyptian monuments.
