Dr. Alan Hale is an astronomer recognized as the co-discoverer of Comet Hale-Bopp in 1995, which became one of the most widely observed and spectacular comets of the twentieth century, visible to the naked eye for a record eighteen months. On Art Bell's programs, his scientific expertise was invaluable in addressing both the astronomical significance of the comet and the extraordinary conspiracy theories and cult activities it inspired.
