The Phoenix Lights Were Two Events. Why Do We Remember One?
An unresolved moving formation, a later flare display, one famous image, and the Art Bell broadcasts that show how two sequences became one certain story.

The claim under review
On March 13, 1997, witnesses reported lights moving south across Arizona. More than an hour later, cameras recorded a second display southwest of Phoenix. The later lights became the famous picture, and their strong flare explanation was eventually asked to account for the whole night.
What the surviving record establishes
The surviving broadcasts preserve two distinct sequences: an earlier moving formation that remains publicly unidentified, and a later filmed array strongly explained as military illumination flares. The later display supplied both the famous picture and a convincing answer. Over time, that answer covered the earlier reports in public memory even though no located evidence shows the flares were released for that purpose.
Before the famous picture, the account was uncertain
On the event-night broadcast, Peter Davenport was still assembling reports as calls arrived from Paulden, Prescott, Phoenix, and points farther south. Witnesses broadly agreed that lights moved through Arizona. They did not agree on whether those lights belonged to one enormous object, several objects, or a formation of separate lights.
That uncertainty is not a later skeptical correction. It is preserved in the earliest surviving broadcast. The central question was still open before the case had a familiar image or a settled public shape.
One name came to contain two sequences
The early reports began around 8:15 p.m. and described lights moving generally north to south. More than an hour later, close to 10 p.m., witnesses southwest of Phoenix saw lights that appeared stationary or slowly descending. Several cameras recorded this later display.
Mike Krzyston filmed the dramatic arc from Moon Valley. Art Bell's audience did not hear that footage identified on the night of the event; Bill Hamilton named Krzyston and the camera location three months later. The image belonged to the later sequence, not the earlier moving formation.
The flare evidence explains the late display
Before the military unit was publicly named, Richard Motzer told Art that the late lights behaved like illumination flares. Multiple camera sites pointed southwest. The lights descended and disappeared at a common distant ridgeline. A later contemporary report identified Maryland Air National Guard A-10 aircraft training over the Barry M. Goldwater Range during Operation Snowbird and releasing illumination flares that night.
The direction, motion, terrain, and named sortie make the flare explanation unusually strong for the approximately 10 p.m. videos. That evidence does not reach backward and identify the earlier formation.
A historical cover is not proof of a cover-up
The training deployment and the flare release are supported. The exact pre-flight status of this release remains unresolved: no located brief, load sheet, range schedule, or mission record specifies that it was planned before takeoff. No located order, communication, or participant account connects the release to the earlier reports.
The later lights did cover the earlier event in public memory. They were brighter, easier to film, and easier to explain. That outcome can feel suspicious without proving intent. A convenient result is not evidence that someone deliberately produced it.
How uncertainty became certainty
Two years after the event, the archive still kept the approximately 8:20 p.m. formation separate from the later flares. A Prescott Valley witness described five lights holding a diamond formation and said a star remained visible between them. His account leaves room for aircraft and for something he could not identify; it does not establish the surface of a single craft.
By 2006, Davenport described five objects, each one or two miles wide. The archive does not prove that anyone invented that scale. It does show the language becoming more definite as later accounts, one unforgettable image, and one familiar explanation were compressed into a single story called the Phoenix Lights.

Nine years later, Davenport describes five objects estimated at one or two miles wide. The comparison shows how much more definite the account had become.
