Orrin Pilkey (born April 17, 1934) is a coastal geologist and James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of Earth and Ocean Sciences at Duke University, renowned for his decades of research and advocacy on beach erosion, sea-level rise, and the folly of coastal engineering. As the author of more than twenty books including The Rising Sea and A Celebration of the World's Barrier Islands, he has been a leading scientific voice warning against building on vulnerable shorelines.
