Dr. Mark J. Carlotto is an aerospace engineer, remote-sensing and image-processing specialist, and author with bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. His technical publications span image analysis, change detection, pattern recognition, and remote sensing. In Linda Moulton Howe's 1998 report, Carlotto compared the new Mars Global Surveyor image of the Cydonia face with 1976 Viking data. He explained how sun angle, camera position, and reprojection changed the apparent features and argued that aligned details remained after compensating for those conditions.
