Art Bell revisits what he calls the most controversial alien contact story of modern times with Dr. Jonathan Reed and his associate Robert Wraith. Reed recounts his 1996 encounter in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State, where he says he struck and apparently killed a small creature that had attacked and destroyed his golden retriever during a day hike.

Reed describes photographing both the being and a hovering diamond-shaped object he calls the obelisk, approximately nine feet long and suspended three feet off the ground. He carried the lightweight body home and placed it in a chest freezer, only to discover three days later that the creature had survived, sitting up and screaming when he opened the lid. Previously unnoticed video footage later revealed the being blinking and moving its facial muscles while Reed believed it was dead.

Reed reports that his home was subsequently ransacked, the freezer removed, and his life upended by surveillance and intimidation. He describes being shot in a parking lot after a lecture and announces plans to present his evidence in Japan. Art examines photographs of the creature and the obelisk on his website throughout the broadcast.

Key Moments

  1. On the trail: golden retriever Suzy torn apart by a vibrating creature: Dr. Jonathan Reed describes cresting the rise on a Cascades day hike to find his dog Suzy in a fight with a small, frantically vibrating being that ripped her head back in half and pulled her body into a kind of void in front of him.

  2. Touching the obelisk: dry-ice cold and hard as granite: Reed describes finding a hovering diamond-shaped obelisk roughly 38 inches off the ground in the woods, falling against it for support, and burning his hand on a surface that was extremely cold yet hard as granite or marble with a fibrous shimmer underneath.

  3. It sat up in the freezer: the moment Reed realized it was alive: Reed plays the recorded scream from the moment he opened his chest freezer days later and the wounded creature sat up. He says he slammed the door, ran inside, and only then admitted to himself he had something alive and badly injured in his garage.

  4. House torn apart, freezer gone, footprints to the wall: Reed says unknown agents ransacked his house, ripped a hole through the garage wall to remove the freezer with the creature inside, and that he found small footprints leading to a wall and stopping, suggesting the being dimensionally shifted away.

  5. Reed says he was shot in a San Diego parking lot: Robert Raith and Reed tell Art that the case has cost Reed his university research practice and that a year earlier Reed was shot in a parking lot after giving a lecture in San Diego, with ongoing harassment, computer compromises, and friends being beaten for talking about the story.
